Why I Left the Cubicle: My Journey to Freedom

9 min readSep 11, 2023

Escaping the hamster wheel wasn’t easy… but it was worth it.

I left my corporate career in 2015 with absolutely no idea what I was doing. I simply woke up one morning and decided that my fear of the unknown was smaller than my fear of continuing the life I was living. I wrote up a two-page resignation letter and cried as I handed it to my boss.

I wasn’t grieving the job I was about to lose. I was grieving the life I gave up for an unforgiving corporate career. Two decades of conformity, titles, and corporate politics had taken an emotional toll on me, and handing him that letter was my first step toward breaking free of that abusive relationship.

Truth be told, I was terrified. I didn’t know who I was outside of the corporate world. I had spent so many years abiding by the rules and playing nice just to avoid an uncomfortable working environment that I had completely lost my personality.

The Corporate Confines

Just a few months after graduation, I started working in a corporate office, so my corporate indoctrination began young. When other 18-year-olds were dressing for the club or wearing their college hoodies, I was buying business casual dress slacks and cardigans for the office.
